“It’s hard to pick your favorite kid,” Anurag Acharya says when I ask him to talk about a favorite Google Scholar feature he’s worked on. “I work on product, engineering, operations, partnerships,” he says. He’s been doing it for 18 years, which as of this month, happens to be how long Google Scholar has been around.

Google Scholar is also one of Google’s longest-running services. The comprehensive database of research papers, legal cases and other scholarly publications was the fourth Search service Google launched, Anurag says. In honor of this very important tool’s 18th anniversary, I asked Anurag to share 18 things you can do in Google Scholar that you might have missed.

1. Copy article citations in the style of your choice.

With a simple click of the cite button (which sits below an article entry), Google Scholar will give you a ready-to-use citation for the article in five styles, including APA, MLA and Chicago. You can select and copy the one you prefer.

2. Dig deeper with related searches.

Google Scholar’s related searches can help you pinpoint your research; you’ll see them show up on a page in between article results. Anurag describes it like this: You start with a big topic — like “cancer” — and follow up with a related search like “lung cancer” or “colon cancer” to explore specific kinds of cancer.

Related searches can help you find what you’re looking for.

3. And don’t miss the related articles.

This is another great way to find more papers similar to one you found helpful — you can find this link right below an entry.

4. Read the papers you find.

Scholarly articles have long been available only by subscription. To keep you from having to log in every time you see a paper you’re interested in, Scholar works with libraries and publishers worldwide to integrate their subscriptions directly into its search results. Look for a link marked [PDF] or [HTML]. This also includes preprints and other free-to-read versions of papers.

5. Access Google Scholar tools from anywhere on the web with the Scholar Button browser extension.

The Scholar Button browser extension is sort of like a mini version of Scholar that can move around the web with you. If you’re searching for something, hitting the extension icon will show you studies about that topic, and if you’re reading a study, you can hit that same button to find a version you read, create a citation or to save it to your Scholar library.

6. Learn more about authors through Scholar profiles.

There are many times when you’ll want to know more about the researchers behind the ideas you’re looking into. You can do this by clicking on an author’s name when it’s hyperlinked in a search result. You’ll find all of their work as well as co-authors, articles they’re cited in and so on. You can also follow authors from their Scholar profile to get email updates about their work, or about when and where their work is cited.

7. Easily find topic experts.

One last thing about author profiles: If there are topics listed below an author’s name on their profile, you can click on these areas of expertise and you’ll see a page of more authors who are researching and publishing on these topics, too.

8. Search for court opinions with the “Case law” button.

Scholar is the largest free database of U.S. court opinions. When you search for something using Google Scholar, you can select the “Case law” button below the search box to see legal cases your keywords are referenced in. You can read the opinions and a summary of what they established.

9. See how those court opinions have been cited.

If you want to better understand the impact of a particular piece of case law, you can select “How Cited,” which is below an entry, to see how and where the document has been cited. For example, here is the How Cited page for Marbury v. Madison , a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that established that courts can strike down unconstitutional laws or statutes.

10. Understand how a legal opinion depends on another.

When you’re looking at how case laws are cited within Google Scholar, click on “Cited by” and check out the horizontal bars next to the different results. They indicate how relevant the cited opinion is in the court decision it’s cited within. You will see zero, one, two or three bars before each result. Those bars indicate the extent to which the new opinion depends on and refers to the cited case.

11. Sign up for Google Scholar alerts.

Want to stay up to date on a specific topic? Create an alert for a Google Scholar search for your topics and you’ll get email updates similar to Google Search alerts. Another way to keep up with research in your area is to follow new articles by leading researchers. Go to their profiles and click “Follow.” If you’re a junior grad student, you may consider following articles related to your advisor’s research topics, for instance.

12. Save interesting articles to your library.

It’s easy to go down fascinating rabbit hole after rabbit hole in Google Scholar. Don’t lose track of your research and use the save option that pops up under search results so articles will be in your library for later reading.

13. Keep your library organized with labels.

Labels aren’t only for Gmail! You can create labels within your Google Scholar library so you can keep your research organized. Click on “My library,” and then the “Manage labels…” option to create a new label.

14. If you’re a researcher, share your research with all your colleagues.

Many research funding agencies around the world now mandate that funded articles should become publicly free to read within a year of publication — or sooner. Scholar profiles list such articles to help researchers keep track of them and open up access to ones that are still locked down. That means you can immediately see what is currently available from researchers you’re interested in and how many of their papers will soon be publicly free to read.

15. Look through Scholar’s annual top publications and papers.

Every year, Google Scholar releases the top publications based on the most-cited papers. That list (available in 11 languages) will also take you to each publication’s top papers — this takes into account the “h index,” which measures how much impact an article has had. It’s an excellent place to start a research journey as well as get an idea about the ideas and discoveries researchers are currently focused on.

16. Get even more specific with Advanced Search.

Click on the hamburger icon on the upper left-hand corner and select Advanced Search to fine-tune your queries. For example, articles with exact words or a particular phrase in the title or articles from a particular journal and so on.

17. Find extra help on Google Scholar’s help page.

It might sound obvious, but there’s a wealth of useful information to be found here — like how often the database is updated, tips on formatting searches and how you can use your library subscriptions when you’re off-campus (looking at you, college students!). Oh, and you’ll even learn the origin of that quote on Google Scholar’s home page.

What is Google Scholar and Why Should You Care?

Google Scholar is a special division of Google that searches for academic content. It is not as robust as Google, and as such it can be harder to search. However, if you are looking for a specific article it is a fantastic resource for finding out if you can access it through your library or if it's available for free.

Below are a few videos on how to use Google Scholar (you can skip the intros if you want) that will show you tips and tricks on how to best use Google Scholar.

Google Scholar Search

Did you know that you can use Google Scholar in addition to Primo to help search Kemp library materials? You just have to add us to your Google Scholar and our results will show up in your searches showing you what you have access to as an ESU community member!

  • Go to  Google Scholar 
  • Make sure you're logged into your Google Account -  you'll see your initials or your icon in the top right hand corner of the screen if you're logged in. 
  • Click on  Settings  (either from the top of the Scholar home page, or from the drop-down on the right hand side of the results page).

Choose  Library Links .

Type ‘East Stroudsburg University’ into the search box.

Click the boxes next to “ESU” and "Kemp Library"

Click  Save .

If you have other institutions you're affilitated with, or ResearchGate, you can add them too!

Databases have more sophisticated search features than Google Scholar , but if you have a one or two word topic Google Scholar can be useful.  You can also try using the Advanced Search in Google Scholar (see the first video below). 

However, if you're having trouble finding something specific, i.e. a specific article, try Google Scholar. For example you want " Game of Thrones and Graffiti" and you don't see it in a database, search the title of the article in Google Scholar (here you'd search "Game of Thrones and Graffiti"). You may find it freely available OR discover it is available through the library, but in a database you didn't look at. 

If we don't have it and you can't access it on Google Scholar, you can always request it via interlibrary loan .

"If Google Scholar isn’t turning up what you need, try an open Google search with the article title in quotes, and type the added filter “filetype:pdf”. This scours the open web for papers hosted somewhere, by someone, in PDF format. Google Books provides limited preview access to many copyrighted books. Other alternate services include  SemanticScholar ,  Microsoft Academic ,  Dimensions , or  GetTheResearch . Here too there are subject-specific portals like  EconBiz  or the  Virtual Health Library , some of which offer multilingual search options." -  Paragraph taken from A Wikipedia Librarian. 

The other services like Microsoft Academic mentioned above are also useful when looking for freely available journal article and research! Don't forget to cite everything you use in your paper/project/presentation/etc.

The first step to take when writing a dissertation is to choose a topic. The following is a list of ideas that may help you to do this:

Place a blank sheet in landscape position and write the topic you have in mind in the middle. Draw branches from the centre, The branches are possible ideas and topics to include in the dissertation. Add sub-topics (“leaves”) and connect ideas and evidence from your reading. You can use colours and images to stimulate your thinking.

Tips for choosing a good topic: 

Choose a topic you will enjoy.  Your dissertation is an opportunity to explore, in depth, a topic of interest. It will be challenging, so pick a topic that will sustain your interest. Doing the initial research in your areas of interest will help you choose a topic that will be both viable and enjoyable. 

Consider the time and resources you will need to successfully complete your dissertation - be realistic!   Research, particularly gathering primary data (such as interviews, experiments or archival research), takes time and may involve other challenges such as travel, language skills, ethical considerations etc. Make sure you speak to your supervisor/tutor early on to ensure that your project is achievable. If your topic is too broad, try to narrow it down , perhaps focusing on a specific sector, country or case study.

To find a suitable topic you will need to conduct a literature search to identify what has been done before, what information is available and what gaps there are in the research.  To carry out a successful literature search, you can try the following steps: 

Define your terms. Ask yourself what the key concepts of your research idea are. Then, compile a list of keywords with their synonyms to help you develop a research strategy. Google and Google Scholar are good places to start. 

Identify relevant information sources . These may include libraries, indexes, archives, the internet (especially, Google Scholar ) and electronic databases.  

Make use of the University library.  If you require help with locating texts, you can book an appointment with an Academic Engagement Librarian. Also, the British Library has a copy of every book published in the UK, which is helpful to know if you cannot get hold of a particular text.  

Use journals. Journals are the best place to find the most up to date research in any field. These are now mostly published online.

5 Practical Time-Saving Tips & Hacks

It’s no easy task to take on the culminating project of your degree, the dreaded dissertation or thesis. Though it might feel like your supervisor expects you to begin your project straight away with an original research idea, in reality, no one expects you to start your dissertation with an exact focus (unless your university defines your topic for you, of course). On the contrary, the first of the many steps in the research process is finding a suitable topic.

At Grad Coach, we’ve worked with thousands of students to help them find high-quality research topics . In this article, we’ll share five practical tips to help you fast-track the topic ideation and refinement process so that you can move your thesis forward.

1. Start with the literature and focus on FRIN 

The starting point for finding a solid research topic is to wrap your head around what’s out there in the existing academic literature covering your broad area of interest. Rather than solely reflecting on possible topics in your head, it is through the process of reading scholarly articles in the literature that your topic ideas will emerge. In other words, topic ideation starts with reading .

A useful tool for locating preliminary literature is Google Scholar , which allows you to type in several general keywords related to your interest areas and then provides you with a list of the most popular articles in that area. Once you’ve located a handful of articles that seem interesting (preferably empirical research studies , but review papers are also useful), you can skim through each article’s abstract . This will typically contain a summary of the methodology and the findings of the study, allowing you to get a big-picture view of the content with very little time investment.

Once you’ve got a big picture view of any given article, navigate to the conclusions and/or recommendations section at the end of the article, where you can hone in on the recommendations offered by the authors. This section is often titled “ future research is needed ” or “further research is needed” (FRIN). The FRIN section generally contains a wealth of potential research ideas, as suggested by the authors. These suggestions will indicate possible research gaps that your project could build from and contribute to the field .

It can be tempting to cease your search at that point, but it’s still important to check whether the recommended research has already been done . To do so, look up the relevant article again in Google Scholar and click on the “Cited by” link to see which studies have since cited that particular piece of work. Take some time to work through those cited studies to verify if the research gap still remains.  If it does, you can add the topic to your list of potentials.

2. Leverage your university’s dissertation database  

In addition to Google Scholar, your university library is an excellent source for both public research and research specific to your university. More specifically, your university should have a database of dissertations and theses from past students, including those from your program. Here you’ll often find existing dissertations covering topics in your interest area, and within their FRIN section, they’ll offer existing gaps in the research that you can consider. 

In addition to illustrating topic ideas, past dissertations and theses from your university database can give you insight into the format and structure/layout norms for your specific university (and program), which will be extremely helpful. It’s also common for your university library to provide access to public dissertation databases such as ProQuest and EBSCO. These databases are much larger, so it’s worth having a dig through them to get a comprehensive view of what’s been done. 

Beyond these databases, you may also find a possible research topic within the micro-level research community that consists of your program’s professors and students. For instance, it can be helpful to look up the profiles of potential supervisors, as universities often list the primary research interests of each professor on the program website. Similarly, it’s a good idea to engage with other students in your cohort to stimulate your thinking and generate research ideas by asking questions and seeking input. While it can feel a bit daunting, don’t be afraid to ask as many questions of your peers and faculty as possible, as this will help you fast-track the process significantly.

3. Prioritize topics that genuinely interest you

Once you’ve identified a few potential research topics (i.e., legitimate research gaps), you’ll need to start evaluating the options and refining your potential topics. 

Contrary to previous short-term program modules and assignments, you’ll be engaged in your dissertation or thesis for a significant amount of time , typically anywhere from 6 months to multiple years (for Ph.D. programs). Because of this time investment, it’s essential that you prioritize and focus on topic ideas that are of genuine interest to you because you’ll need to stay motivated during your research journey. More practically, you’ll also convey a genuine interest in your writing, so, picking a topic that doesn’t excite you is going to make this difficult. 

On a separate but related note, it’s also important to be confident in whichever topic you settle on. It is quite common to feel like a bit of an imposter as an emerging scholar when comparing your work to the established literature on the research topic. For example, you may feel that your research topic doesn’t look quite as “academic” as others. However, don’t be discouraged because it’s very common for the exact focal point of your research to evolve during the research process. So, if there’s a novel topic within the literature gap that genuinely interests you, silence those niggling doubts and pursue it.

You’ll be engaged in your research for a significant amount of time, so it’s essential that you find a topic that genuinely interests you.

4. Play to your strengths 

In addition to prioritizing topics that you’re passionate about, it’s also wise to give preference to topic ideas that play to your strengths in terms of the research design and methodology . Some of the main questions to consider from the get-go are: 

  • What kind of research approach (qualitative or quantitative) is comfortable for me?
  • Where and/or whom can I collect data from?
  • Will I be able to collect the intended data within the time limit of my project? 

To begin, consider your preferences in terms of work with either qualitative or quantitative, data . Qualitative research , commonly abbreviated to QUAL, tends to rely on personal engagement with people, so this kind of research makes use of interviews, focus groups, or observations for data collection. In contrast, quantitative research , or QUANT, predominantly involves analyzing numerical data using statistical methods. Mixed methods, or MIXED, makes use of both qualitative and quantitative features in a holistic manner. 

Think about what your methodological preference is (are you a numbers or words type of person?)  and look for topics that support that approach . Keep in mind that everyone differs in terms of their preference toward qualitative or quantitative data, so don’t try to force a methodological decision that feels unnatural to you . It’s worth mentioning that while mixed methods has been growing in popularity over recent years, you should only take this approach if your research aims and research questions strongly justify it, as it can be quite challenging to execute well. As a rule of thumb, a simpler design executed well will typically earn more marks than a complex one executed poorly.           

After determining your preferred approach, it’s important to be realistic about the data and people (participants) that you’ll be able to access to accommodate any given topic and approach. It can be particularly challenging to recruit participants for a variety of reasons and it’s extremely common for students to overestimate the availability of data or interviewees, which can lead to major problems down the line . Remember, without data, you have no study! 

Lastly, keep in mind that there are many things that potential participants won’t be comfortable talking about. So, be realistic in terms of your expectations, and remember that other people won’t be as enthusiastic about your project as you are. Nevertheless, don’t be shy to reach out to people and ask for favors or get feedback, as they are generally receptive, but be respectful of their time and do this well in advance. Ultimately, if you’re not confident that you can access the required data for any potential topic , avoid that research topic .

Think carefully about whether you're more of a numbers person or words/feelings person and prioritize topics that can leverage that leaning.

5. Keep it simple 

Our final tip is to keep it simple in terms of both your topic and methodology . One of the most commendable aspects of students as emerging scholars is their idealism when it comes to research outlook. At Grad Coach, we commonly interact with students at the start of their project who want to change the world with their research or present a breakthrough in the field. Despite the best of intentions, this kind of macro-level, overly ambitious research topic is not typically achievable (or even desired). 

In reality, your supervisor is not expecting your research project to change the world . As I mentioned earlier, what typically works best is a simple project that’s executed well, rather than a complex project done poorly. So, keep your scope narrow and focused rather than trying to connect every possible dot with your research. This can be accomplished by keeping your research focus straightforward, making sure your research questions , aims, and objectives are all in alignment, and by finding a new way to expand on existing work, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel and start from scratch. 

Importantly, you need to be realistic about what’s manageable within your timeframe .  Your program will only last a finite amount of time, so you need to think about what you can do within that time frame. Overall, the key assessment criteria will be whether you’ve learned how to design and carry out research , not whether your research has broken new ground.

Dissertation Research

Dissertation topics are a special subset of research topics. All of the previously mentioned techniques can, and should, be utilized to locate potential dissertation topics, but there are also some special considerations to keep in mind when choosing a dissertation topic.

Dissertation topics should interesting, feasible, relevant, and worthy. The criterion of feasibility is especially important when choosing a dissertation topic. You don’t want to settle on a topic and then find out that the study you were imagining can’t be done, or the survey or assessment instrument you need can’t be used. You also want to make sure that you select a topic that will allow you to be an objective researcher. If you select a topic that you have worked closely on for many years, make sure you are still open to new information, even if that information runs counter what you believe to be true about the topic. It is very important to think about these considerations beforehand so that you don’t get stuck during the dissertation process. Here are some considerations to keep in mind when choosing a dissertation topic:

  • Access to the primary literature relating to your topic
  • Access to grey literature relating to your topic
  • Access to the surveys and assessment instruments that you will need
  • Access to the study group to conduct your study
  • IRB approval for your study
  • Access to equipment for your study, if needed

Note that published surveys and assessment instruments are generally NOT free. Due to copyright laws you will more than likely need to purchase the survey from the publisher in order to gain permissions to use in your own study. Unpublished surveys and assessments (usually found in the appendices of articles) may be freely available, but you will need to contact the author(s) to gain permission to use the survey in your research.

Looking at previously published dissertations is a great way to gauge the level of research and involvement that is generally expected at the dissertation level. Previously published dissertations can also be good sources of inspiration for your own dissertation study. Similar to scholarly articles, many dissertations will suggest areas of future research. Paying attention to those suggestions can provide valuable ideas and clues for your own dissertation topic. Note that dissertations are not considered to be peer-reviewed documents, so carefully review and evaluate the information presented in them.

The literature review section in a dissertation contains a wealth of information. Not only can the literature review provide topic ideas by showing some of the major research that has been done on a topic, but it can also help you evaluate any topics that you are tentatively considering. From your examination of literature reviews can you determine if your research idea has already been completed? Has the theory that validates your study been disproved by new dissertation research? Is your research idea still relevant to the current state of the discipline? Literature reviews can help you answer these questions by providing a compact and summative description of a particular research area.

You may find it difficult to find scholarly articles, and books in which your hypothesis is directly addressed. If so, then expand your search to theories and variables that are related, but not directly so. No matter how specific or elusive your topic is, there is research out there that is relevant, so keep looking. Look for resources that address one or two of the variables in your study, theories that are either directly or indirectly related, as well as research that relates specifically to the population of interest. By focusing on resources that address different parts of your research topic, you can combine this information in a way that is directly applicable.

A relevant dissertation topic means that your research will contribute something worthwhile to your field in a scientific, social, or practical way.

As you plan out your dissertation process , make sure that you’re writing something that is important and interesting to you personally, as well as appropriate within your field.

If you are studying hard or social sciences, the scientific relevance of your dissertation is crucial. Your research should fill a gap in existing scientific knowledge, something that hasn’t been extensively studied before.

One way to find a relevant topic is to look at the recommendations for follow-up studies that are made in existing scientific articles and the works they cite. From there, you can pursue quantitative research , statistical analyses , or the relevant methodology for the type of research you choose to undertake.

Formulating a main research question can be a difficult task. Overall, your question should contribute to solving the problem that you have defined in your problem statement .

However, it should also fulfill criteria in three main areas:

  • Researchability
  • Feasibility and specificity
  • Relevance and originality

A dissertation prospectus or proposal describes what or who you plan to research for your dissertation. It delves into why, when, where, and how you will do your research, as well as helps you choose a type of research to pursue. You should also determine whether you plan to pursue qualitative or quantitative methods and what your research design will look like.

It should outline all of the decisions you have taken about your project, from your dissertation topic to your hypotheses and research objectives , ready to be approved by your supervisor or committee.

Note that some departments require a defense component, where you present your prospectus to your committee orally.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical first steps in your writing process. It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding what kind of research you’d like to undertake.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review , research methods , avenues for future research, etc.)

All research questions should be:

  • Focused on a single problem or issue
  • Researchable using primary and/or secondary sources
  • Feasible to answer within the timeframe and practical constraints
  • Specific enough to answer thoroughly
  • Complex enough to develop the answer over the space of a paper or thesis
  • Relevant to your field of study and/or society more broadly

Writing Strong Research Questions

You can assess information and arguments critically by asking certain questions about the source. You can use the CRAAP test , focusing on the currency , relevance , authority , accuracy , and purpose of a source of information.

Ask questions such as:

  • Who is the author? Are they an expert?
  • Why did the author publish it? What is their motivation?
  • How do they make their argument? Is it backed up by evidence?

The best way to remember the difference between a research plan and a research proposal is that they have fundamentally different audiences. A research plan helps you, the researcher, organize your thoughts. On the other hand, a dissertation proposal or research proposal aims to convince others (e.g., a supervisor, a funding body, or a dissertation committee) that your research topic is relevant and worthy of being conducted.

Finding EMU Dissertations and Theses

In addition to the Esearch search above, there are two places to look for dissertations and theses by EMU students: EMU's Digital Commons and a database from the company Proquest.

There are three links to Digital Commons below: two links show a list of dissertations by specific COE departments and the 3rd link goes to the full EMU Digital Commons which will also include Masters Theses from all three COE departments.

The fourth (last) link goes to a ProQuest database of EMU theses. Although there is overlap coverage between Digital Commons and ProQuest, each will have unique theses not found in the other.

Getting the Full Dissertation

Try first to look in Google Scholar and Dissertations & Theses Global Full Text  (above) for digital fulltext of a dissertation. Many universities are now posting dissertations in repositories (like Digital Commons). Google Scholar includes Digital Commons and other repositories in its search. If that doesn't work, you might also try a regular Google search.

An effective way to search for the dissertation in Google Scholar or Google is to place the title in quotes, followed by the author last name. Example search: "Self-Efficacy and Instructional Leadership" Helber

For older dissertations, you may need to try to interlibrary loan the dissertation. You can get an idea of whether the dissertation is at a library by searching OCLC WorldCat . Or go to the web site for the library of the university where the author did the dissertation. Unfortunately, sometimes dissertations are not available via interlibrary loan. As a last resort, you may be able to purchase dissertations from ProQuest--see DissertationExpress  link below.
